原作神話意象和原型意象的再現
文學作品常常通過神話和原型意象來表達深刻復雜的思想感情和文化內涵,表現特定民族的世界觀、人生觀、價值觀、藝術審美觀、思維方式、語言觀等,蘊含了民族文化心理的深厚積淀。文學語言是一種文化符號,作品的詞語能傳達一定的文化內涵,而且作品整體能傳達一種總體的文化寓意。不同民族的文學都有自己特定的神話和原型意象,西方文化富于宗教色彩,其文學作品中的原型意象有不少是宗教意象,包含了深刻的宗教體驗。譯者要深入全面地了解源語文化和譯語文化,深刻領悟原作神話和原型意象所包含的文化意蘊,力求通過譯語將其傳達出來。下面是英國詩人濟慈的Ode to Psyche和何功杰的譯文:
O Goddess!Hear these tuneless numbers,wrung
By sweet enforcement and remembrance dear,
And pardon that thy secrets should be sung.
Even into thine own soft-conched ear:
Surely I dreamt to-day,or did I see
The winged psyche with awakened eyes?
I wander'd in a forest thoughtlessly,
And,on the sudden,fainting with surprise,

在希臘神話中普賽克原是凡世的一個美女,與女神維納斯之子丘比特相戀。維納斯嫉妒其美貌,想阻撓其與丘比特的戀情。普賽克幾經磨難,終與丘比特結為良緣,自己也升入天堂,變成了美麗的仙子。原詩抒發(fā)了詩人對女神普賽克的贊美之情。原詩首節(jié)寫“我”心中珍藏著一段美好的回憶,sweet、dear表達了“我”對普賽克和丘比特的喜愛。“我”在夢中游蕩,無意間發(fā)現了熱戀中的普賽克和丘比特,作品通過視覺意象(winged Psyche、trembled leaves、blue,silverwhite and budded Tyrian、tender eye、winged boy)、聽覺意象(whisp'ring roof)、觸覺意象(coolrooted flowers)等描繪了一幅優(yōu)美的景色和普賽克與丘比特熱戀的場面。何譯“它來自甜蜜的苦思和親切的回憶”用“甜蜜”、“親切”傳達了“我”對普賽克和丘比特的喜愛,“深草”、“竊竊私語的綠葉”、“花兒搖曳,溪水潺潺”、“藍色的,銀白色的花朵和紫色花蕾”再現了原詩意象的視覺美和聽覺美?!八麄兲芍届o地呼吸,以草為床/雙臂擁抱著,羽翼也相連/嘴唇雖未接觸,但也沒有離遠/仿佛睡神之手輕輕把他們分開/當黎明女神愛戀溫柔的眼睛亮起來/他們還準備繼續(xù)更多的吻愛”生動地再現了普賽克與丘比特熱戀的場面,“真心相隨”準確地傳達了普賽克與丘比特之間真摯的愛情。
原詩第二節(jié)寫普賽克從凡人變?yōu)樘煜?,作品用一組排比否定句,強調普賽克作為晚到者在眾女神中地位最低。第三、五行中兩個Fairer分別放在行首,相互呼應,強調普賽克容貌出眾,力壓群芳。何譯保留了原詩由no引導的排比結構,“紅消艷退”強調普賽克美貌出眾,“堆滿鮮花的祭壇”、“裊繞的香爐中飄出的馨香”、“嘴唇蒼白的先知”生動地再現了原詩意象的視覺美和嗅覺美。
原詩第三節(jié),O brightest!though too late for antique vows把Brightest放在行首,語氣強烈,表達了詩人對普賽克美貌的贊美。Too,too late for the fond believing lyre/When holy were the hunted forest boughs/Holy the air,the water,and the fire中too late與上節(jié)的latest相呼應,兩個holy前置,渲染了宗教色彩和氛圍。原詩第二節(jié)用了No引導的一組排比否定句,強調普賽克地位低下,第三節(jié)用一組排比肯定句與其形成對比,強調普賽克在詩人心中地位崇高,愿意為她奉獻上她理所應得的東西。視覺意象(palemouth'd prophet、thy lucent fans)、聽覺意象(whisp'ring roof)、嗅覺意象(thy incense sweet)抒發(fā)了詩人對普賽克的贊美之情。何譯保留了原詩的排比肯定句,“最明亮的女神”傳達了詩人對普賽克美貌的贊美,“神靈”、“神圣無比”用詞靈活。“你那光輝明亮的羽翼依然在振蕩”中“光輝明亮”與上文的“最明亮”相呼應,“我憑靈感看見了你,憑靈感歌唱”中“靈感”的疊用語氣強烈。
原詩第四節(jié)寫詩人從普賽克那里獲得了靈感、幻想和激情,他要用優(yōu)美的詩歌為她修建一座殿堂(fane),在這藝術的圣地里與普賽克進行精神的交流。darkcluster'd trees、mosslain Dryads、lull'd to sleep描繪了詩人所構想的精神家園安寧幽靜的氛圍。rosy sanctuary、wreath'd trellis、bright torch等意象生動地描繪了詩人幻想中的藝術圣殿,詩人憑借豐富的想象和聯想(With all the gardener Fancy e'er could feign),用如詩如畫的語言描繪了一個奇幻的藝術世界。何譯“細語喃喃”、“幽暗”、“催入睡鄉(xiāng)”再現了詩人所構想的精神家園安寧幽靜的氛圍?!皽厝帷薄ⅰ皻g欣”、“溫情”傳達了詩人想象中的藝術圣殿給普賽克帶來的幸福和歡樂。下面是英國詩人柯勒律治的Kubla Khan和何功杰的譯文:
In Xanadu did Kubla Khan
A stately pleasure-dome decree:
Where Alph,the sacred river,ran
Though caverns measureless to man

在這呼嘯聲中忽必烈聽到
久遠的祖先預言戰(zhàn)爭的聲調!
歡樂宮的倒影
在水波中間浮動;
那里可以聽到諧和的樂音,
來自山泉,來自穴洞,
那是一個罕見的設計奇跡,
朝陽宮宇和冰凌穴洞連在一起!
我曾在幻覺中見到,
一位抱著古琴的少女:
她是一位阿比西尼亞姑娘,
一面彈著她的古琴,
一面唱著阿巴拉山之歌。
如果我能重新回想起
那支交響曲,能唱那首歌,
我將感到由衷的無比欣喜,
我會久久地高唱那首歌曲,
在空中建造起那座歡樂宮,
那座朝陽宮殿!那些冰凌山洞!
讓所有聽到那歌曲的人都會見到它,
都會驚奇地呼喊:當心!當心!
他那閃爍的目光,他那飄飛的頭發(fā),
懷著既崇敬又害怕的圣潔之情,
閉上你的雙眼,圍著他繞行三圈,
因為他曾以甘露為食糧,
喝過天堂里的乳漿。
原詩描寫了大量的超現實神話意象。據詩人自述,該詩寫于詩人夢醒之后,描繪了其奇譎朦朧的夢中體驗。原詩首節(jié)描寫詩人夢中的“歡樂宮”(pleasure-dome)和“阿爾夫圣河”(Alph)的景象,measureless、sunless描寫山洞(caverns)和大海(sea)的幽深,與下文的bright、sunny形成暗與明的對比,富于視覺美。“歡樂宮”附近綠草如茵,繁花似錦,何譯用四字語“花園處處”、“小溪彎彎”、“波光粼粼”、“蔥翠草地”、“陽光幽幽”生動地再現了“歡樂宮”四周優(yōu)美的景色和靜謐的環(huán)境。原詩第二節(jié)描寫阿爾夫圣河在峽谷和森林中蜿蜒曲行,神圣而富于魅力,savage、holy、enchanted、haunted、demon-love渲染了一種神秘陰森的氛圍,富于柔美,何譯“永遠神圣,永具魅力”傳達了原詩神秘圣潔的氛圍。阿爾夫圣河一路奔騰咆哮,氣勢磅礴,turmoil、mighty、swift、burst、rebounding、flung up表現了一種壯美。何譯用“翻騰”、“喧囂”、“噴出”、“彈跳”、“飛揚”、“奔騰”等一組動詞生動地再現了原詩所描繪的阿爾夫圣河奔騰咆哮的磅礴氣勢。meandering、mazy、measureless描寫阿爾夫圣河蜿蜒曲折,奔流入海,何譯“蜿蜒流動”、“穿過谷地,穿過森林”再現了阿爾夫圣河蜿蜒前行的景象。阿爾夫圣河谷的景色如夢如幻,讓詩人浮想聯翩,聯想起古代的神話傳說,shadow、miracle、rare渲染了一種神秘色彩,何譯再現了原詩意象所描寫的夢幻神秘的景象。原詩第三節(jié)寫詩人在夢幻中仿佛聽到古代少女的琴聲,這來自“歡樂宮”的天籟之音如泣如訴,讓詩人如癡如醉,何譯“由衷的無比欣喜”、“久久地高唱”傳達了少女的琴聲帶給詩人的欣喜和愉悅。詩人迷離恍惚之中感受到一種神圣敬畏的體驗(holy dread),意象flashing eyes、floating hair富于視覺美。何譯“崇敬”、“害怕”、“圣潔”傳達了詩人神圣敬畏的情感體驗,“閃爍的目光”、“飄飛的頭發(fā)”再現了原詩意象的視覺美。
